About this coloring page
Perched on rough bark, front legs folded in that famous thoughtful pose, this mantis is drawn with more realism than the average cute-bug page. The branch carries patches of bark texture, and four broad leaves fan out around it with clean vein lines. The mantis itself is all narrow segments and skinny angled legs. So it asks for control. Sharp pencils, mostly, since the mantis's skinny leg segments swallow anything wider, plus a colorer who's happy working small, nine and up probably. Greens on greens can flatten fast, so shift the leaves toward blue-green and keep the mantis a brighter spring green so it pops off the branch. Bark takes gray-brown better than plain brown, at least to my eye. A calm page, and a quietly impressive one when it's finished.
