Get the ink flowing evenly
Roll the pen on scrap paper until the line is consistent, especially if it has been stored tip-up. Smooth paper helps the ball move without catching, while a small swatch shows the real color and opacity before it reaches the page.
Build coverage with patience
Use light, parallel strokes and let the first layer dry before crossing it. Gel ink can look patchy while wet but settle as it dries. For broad areas, work from the outer edge inward and turn the paper instead of pressing harder.
Prevent smudges
Rest your hand on a clean sheet of scrap paper, and finish sections from the far side of the page toward yourself. Metallic and white pens often need extra drying time. Try the method on a simple page from the free library first.
