Smoke gets the starring role at every real rocket launch, and this artist clearly knew it. Billowing clouds swallow the entire bottom half of the picture while the rocket climbs away at a jaunty angle with flames trailing and two porthole windows along its side. Three big stars and one small one wait higher up.
Those clouds are the opportunity. Work grays and lilacs through the billows so they read as thick, or shade each puff a slightly different tone for depth, an easy first shading lesson for kids around seven or eight. Bold red suits the nose cone and fins. And if anyone asks, launch smoke is mostly steam, billions of water droplets, which is satisfying trivia to drop mid-crayon.
