What the research shows
In a 2005 study in the journal Art Therapy, Curry and Kasser deliberately made 84 undergraduates anxious, then gave them twenty minutes to color. Students who colored mandalas or plaid patterns reported significant drops in anxiety; students who colored freely on a blank page didn't. The structure itself is part of the benefit, and plaid worked as well as the mandala, so it isn't about anything mystical in the design.
In a 2017 study at the University of Otago, Flett and colleagues had 115 university students either color or solve logic puzzles daily for a week. The coloring group reported lower anxiety and fewer depressive symptoms; the puzzle group didn't.
What clinicians say
The Mayo Clinic Health System recommends coloring as a mindfulness practice that relieves stress and can improve sleep. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Scott Bea puts the mechanism plainly: coloring moves attention off yourself and onto a simple task with very low stakes, the same shift meditation aims for, minus the practice meditation demands.
Benefits beyond mood
Coloring is also fine motor practice for hands and eyes, one of the few sit-down hobbies that involves no screen, and close to free: a box of pencils plus free printable coloring pages is a complete hobby for under ten dollars.
