What is an adult coloring book?

An adult coloring book is a coloring book designed for grown-ups: dense, intricate line art such as mandalas, botanical patterns, and detailed scenes, drawn with finer lines and smaller spaces than a children's book. People buy them for the focus and stress relief as much as the finished art.

How it differs from a kids' coloring book

Three things set adult books apart: line density (finer lines, smaller regions, more of them), subject matter (patterns, nature, typography, and scenes instead of cartoon characters), and paper (heavier stock meant to take layered colored pencil and, in better books, markers without bleed-through). A typical paperback runs 50 to 100 designs and costs somewhere between eight and sixteen dollars.

Why they took off

The category exploded after Johanna Basford's Secret Garden (2013) sold more than ten million copies worldwide and pulled coloring onto bestseller lists; by 2015, industry trackers were crediting adult coloring books with a measurable share of that year's print-sales growth. The boom faded from headlines, but the habit stuck, and publishers have kept the shelves full since.

What's on shelves now

The current bestseller lists look different from the 2015 wave. "Bold and easy" books, thick outlines and large shapes marketed to adults who found Basford-era intricacy exhausting, dominate the category, alongside large-print books and spooky-cute character styles. It turns out plenty of adults want adult themes with kid-sized regions, and there's no rule against that.

How to pick a good one

Check four things before buying: single-sided printing (so marker bleed-through doesn't ruin the next design), paper weight, binding that lies flat or is spiral-bound (perfect-bound spines swallow the inner edge of every page), and a publisher preview of actual pages rather than just the cover. If you color with markers, our test of which paper survives markers explains what to look for.
