Four hours, and it pairs unreasonably well with a rainy evening.
9. Steampunk workshop
The gears will find every dull pencil you own. I'd planned a full palette for the steampunk workshop and ended up using brass, copper, and one deep blue for the shadows, and it came out better than the ambitious version would have. In my experience the pages crowded with machinery reward restraint more than the flowery ones do, though I could be wrong here. Six hours. The tiny gear teeth around the clock faces are the fiddliest patch of any page on this list.
10. Fairy castle
Save this one for when the others have built your patience up. Towers across floating cliffs, crystal bridges between them, and enough sky that you should decide up front whether the sky is happening at all. Mine isn't. The fairy castle with a finished castle and an untouched background still looks intentional, eight hours across two weeks, and hanging it felt like finishing a small quiet project because that's what it was.
Finishing a big page without resenting it
Decide what done means before the first stroke. The whole subject and nothing else is a fine target. So is one quadrant. An unfinished background never once bothered anyone who wasn't the artist, at least in my experience, and I could be wrong here, but I suspect the half-done look is charming. Sessions beat marathons too, three short evenings leave you fonder of a page than one long slog (something about stopping while you still want more, I think, though I've never tested it properly).
Good light matters more than good pencils once regions shrink past a certain size, and the little folding lamp by my couch has rescued more evening sessions than any technique has.
